After reviewing thousands of calls from prospective storage customers, it has become clear that the process, from start to finish, generates a lot of questions from first time self storage users. Renting Denver storage units may seem complicated, but the steps are simple. Below we outline the lifecycle of a typical customer’s search for the right storage unit and highlight some useful tips for renting.
Know What You Are Storing
Start by preparing a mental note of everything that needs to be stored. This will help your facility manager best estimate the size storage unit you need. This happens often: Customers come into the facility with a truck full of heavy belongings and begin unloading into their 10x10 storage unit, only to realize too late that they needed a 10x15. This is absolutely fine and an easy transfer to another unit within the facility, but it means more moving…and everyone hates moving. So know what you’re storing and be able to articulate that to your facility manager. Our self storage managers are skilled at estimating the size you’ll need based on what you have.
Its also important to know what features you’ll need in your unit to best preserve the items you are storing. Are any of the items you plan to store sensitive to temperature or humidity? If so, you will most likely need a climate-controlled storage unit. Typically, the following items need to be stored indoors with some type of climate-control: leathers, furs, clothing, paintings, film, photographs, furniture, antiques, musical instruments, wine, paper, software, DVDs, CDs and electronics.
Will you be accessing your unit often to remove or add new items? If so, you may require a lighted unit or even a unit with a power outlet. Being conscious of your needs will save you time and energy later on.
Ask About the Hours
Denver storage facilities schedule their hours of operation differently, so its important to inquire exactly when the office will be open and what hours you’ll be allowed to access your storage unit. Most storage companies have their offices open normal business hours, which differ slightly everywhere you will look.
Greenbox Self Storage has office hours between 9:30am and 6:00pm on weekdays, and 9:00am to 5:30pm on weekends. These are the hours you’ll be able to go into the office and fill out the appropriate paperwork to lease your unit.
Typically, access hours (the hours you’re allowed to access your storage unit), are a wider range of time than office hours. Our tenants can access their units 6:00am to 10:00pm any day of the year. In certain circumstances we will grant a tenant the right to access their unit outside of these access hours. Some businesses need to be able to access their unit at all times, in which case, we would accommodate.
Some other storage companies allow 24-7 access of tenant units. Some argue that allowing this access creates a less-secure facility.
The Reality About Price
Next to finding a storage facility that is close to your home, price is the main deciding factor for most storage renters. Every storage company prices their units based on market rates. Its how we stay competitive in an increasingly competitive market. Because of this, unit rates will fluctuate day to day.
Its important to make a reservation when you find a price that will work for you. At Greenbox, when we reserve a unit for someone, it locks in their unit rate. Reservations are no obligation, meaning no money or credit card is required, it simply saves the unit for you at the agreed upon price. We push for all of our callers to reserve with us, even if they’re still shopping around. It happens often: Someone calls for a price, waits a month to reserve, and when they call back the unit they were looking at is either taken or the price has risen by $10-$30. Be smart and reserve your unit. Its no cost to you.
We suggest leasing a storage unit from a company that offers month-to-month rentals. That’s what we offer, and it allows for maximum flexibility for our customers.
Look for Deals
There’s no shortage of deals and promotions out there for Denver storage units. They come with many different names, but the majority of legitimate self storage businesses offer similar deals. A common one is, when you lease for 2 or more months, you get your first month for $1.
Greenbox Self Storage offers tenants their first month free when they prepay for the second month, which is available for all unit sizes over 5x5.
Look for Added Benefits
Although the price of your storage unit may be the most important thing for your decision, its also worth looking at some of the added benefits the storage facility may have. These benefits can make your move in to your unit a lot less stressful and save you money.
Greenbox Self Storage offers our customers the Free use of our moving truck for 4 hours. This takes away the need for renting a Uhaul or pestering your one friend who owns a pickup truck. We only ask to be shown your drivers license and proof of insurance.
Another added benefit that Greenbox Self Storage offers is use of our business center. Every one of our facilities has a business center equipped with a meeting room and printing services. We’ll even accept packages you order right to the facility!
Know the Extra Costs
Most, if not all storage facilities charge a one-time admin fee upon move in, so just be aware of that. Typical admin fees range from $20-$30. Additionally, you will need some form of protection for your unit. Most rental or homeowner’s insurance will cover your storage unit. However, if it does not, we offer 3 levels of protection plans that start at $10 per month.
Most storage facilities require you to provide your own lock for the storage unit. You must be careful to purchase the correct type of lock, as they differ between facilities. Most facilities sell locks and other merchandise in the front office. Here you can stock up on boxes, tape, and any other supplies you need.
Get Set UP on Autopay
With month to month leases, its not always easy to remember when you have an upcoming payment on your storage unit. That’s why we insist our customers to be set up on autopay, that way you’ll never miss a payment, which could cost you extra money in delinquency fees. However, if you don’t wish to pay yourself every month, all it takes is a call into your facility. If you miss a payment, Greenbox Self Storage gives a 5-day grace period to get your payment in. And we will remind you when you are overdue.
And that should do it! Like we said before, moving into a storage unit can seem complicated at first glance, but its actually really simple. Follow this simple guide, and you’ll be moved into your unit in no time. If further questions do arise, all it takes is a call into your storage facility and the manager on duty will be able to answer whatever you need. We hope this helped clear up some uncertainty. Happy Storing!
